In the second event of its type to take place this year, an Apple employee has lost an unreleased model of an iPhone in a public place.

The most recent incident follows a similar occurrence when an Apple employee misplaced his iPhone in San Francisco’s Mission District in July. Apple security has look everywhere for the device for several days and came to the conclusion that it was lost in a Mexican restaurant.

Apple security say that the phone may have been sold on Craigslist for less than $200.

The mobile and computer firm has not announced any plans to release a new smartphone, but there have been several unconfirmed reports that the company was planning a launch date in October for the iPhone 5.

No reports of the details of the phone, such as operating system and design, have been revealed in the most recent a blunder by Apple staff.

In 2010, a gadget blog paid $5000 in cash for an unreleased version of the iPhone 4, which an Apple engineer had left in a German beer garden at Redwood City, California.

Two men were charged with misdemeanour theft chargers for selling the iPhone 4 to the blog.

The previous release of the iPhone saw the company take extreme measure to protect itself from information leaks, including transporting the devices in locked and sealed containers.

Apple and Craigslist have not made any comment on the missing phone, and local police authorities in California said that no official report had been filed.
